The Su-85 tank destroyer came into being when Soviet tank crew requested a bigger gun than the 76mm on the T-34. The engineers simply mounted the 85mm gun on the T-34. The result was the SU-85 which was well armed and have a very slope armour and was very popular with the crew. However, when a design for a 85mm gun turret was finally completed for the T-34. The T-34/85 with the 85mm gun became the main stay of Soviet tank forces from 1944 onward. A 100mm gun was intoduced into the SU-85 chassis and this became the SU-100.
